Acts 4:11–12
This Jesus is the stone that was rejected by you, the builders, which has become the cornerstone. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
Have you ever felt the like the world was falling in upon you? A time when everything seems to be going wrong. Even now we are in the coldest, greyest months of the year and it’s easy to feel down. King David was all too familiar to those feelings as he ran from king Saul and people were reporting his whereabouts to the king (Psalm 54). How frustrating to be living on the run and not experiencing the blessings of being the anointed one by God. David’s response was to call upon the Name of the Lord for salvation! He believed that God is his helper (Heb. 13:5-6) and deliverer.
The Apostle Peter brings clarity to the Name of God that brings salvation: Jesus. God has given us his name, his Son, and a way of salvation. In preparing our hearts to sing together this Sunday, we are reminded that Jesus is the Fount of every blessing. Jesus is Strong and Kind reminds us that He is strong enough and kind enough to save. It also reminds us that “no one else can satisfy, no one else can be our strength, no one else can be our shield” and we can always run to Jesus. Before the Throne of God Above reminds us that Jesus’ work for salvation on the cross is finished, but his work as our Great High Priest and mediator continues as He pleads our case before the Father.
Just as David concludes Psalm 54 by offering himself as a freewill sacrifice to God, we will sing All to Jesus I Surrender as a reminder to freely give ourselves to Jesus every day (Rom. 12:1-2). Our trials and circumstances may be difficult and seemingly unbearable, but our God is bigger, stronger, and ready to save as we call on the name of Jesus.
