August 15, 2025 – The Name Above Every Name
Philippians 2:9-11 – Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Scripture Reading – Psalm 83
The writer of Psalm 83 is crying out to God about the many enemies that are against Israel. But he makes an interesting plea at the end. He asks that the enemies be put to shame, however, he doesn’t just ask that they be destroyed. He asks that they may seek the name of the LORD, to know that he alone is the Most High over all the earth (vv. 16-18).
How is this perspective even possible in the midst of great suffering, particularly suffering caused by others? Because Jesus gave us the ultimate example of sacrificial humility, to put the eternal welfare of others above himself (Philippians 2:1-8).
Therefore, Paul tells us, that God has highly exalted the name of Jesus. His name is the name above every name. Every knee in heaven (the angels and the redeemed), on earth (all created, living things), and under the earth (demonic powers and the unredeemed) will bow to Jesus Christ, acknowledging him as Lord.
When we call on the name of Jesus and put our faith in him, we aren’t just given a new name, but a completely transformed identity. The Bible tells us we are chosen (Ephesians 1:4); adopted (Ephesians 1:5, Romans 8:14-15); children of God (Galatians 3:26, John 1:12); redeemed and forgiven (Ephesians 1:7); a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17); a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9); citizens of heaven (Philippians 3:20); God’s workmanship (Ephesians 2:10); heirs of God(Romans 8:16-17); friend of Jesus (John 15:15).
As we gather to worship on Sunday morning, we will begin by singing “O Praise the Name.” Let us sing robustly to the Name that is above every name. In “Christ is Risen” we are reminded that he trampled over death and we are one with him. In “My Jesus I Love Thee” and “Christ is Mine Forevermore” we will sing of his great, eternal love for us and the privilege it is to respond back to him in love and devotion.

Reflection Questions:
1. Do you tend to call on the name of Jesus in your time of need, or something more worldly or self-driven?
2. What part of your transformed identity did you need most reminding of today? How do you respond?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you are the Name above every name. You are the way, the truth, and the life. Give me a spirit of humility, love and grace like yours. Help me to live my life in such a way to desire and point people (all people) to you so they can live eternally with you. Amen.
