August 21 – The Shepherd Who Leads Us Home
Psalm 23:1-4
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Scripture Reading – Philippians 3:12-21
Psalm 23 reminds us that we are not walking through life alone. The Lord is our Shepherd: He provides, leads, restores, and stays with us even when the path leads through the darkest valley. Philippians 3 gives us a similar picture. Paul acknowledges that he has not arrived yet; he is still pressing forward, forgetting what lies behind and reaching toward what lies ahead. The Christian life is both a journey and a destination. We follow our Shepherd through difficult valleys while keeping our eyes fixed on the hope that awaits us. Paul reminds us that our citizenship is in heaven, where Christ will transform us and make us like Himself. We may not understand every valley, but we can trust the Shepherd who leads us through it. He is with us now, and He is leading us home.
These songs remind us what it means to follow Christ when the road is difficult. “You Never Let Go” declares that even in the darkest valley, God remains faithful and present. “Run and Run” points us toward Christ as our righteousness, we don't run to earn His favor but because His grace has already made us His own. “Crown Him with Many Crowns” turns our eyes from our circumstances to the reigning King who is worthy of all praise. Finally, “Hymn of Heaven” reminds us where our journey is ultimately headed. Together, these songs move us from fear to faith, from striving to grace, and from the struggles of today to the glory that awaits us. The Shepherd who walks with us through the valley is also the King who will welcome us home.

Reflection Questions:
1. Where in your life do you currently need to trust the Shepherd rather than trying to find your own way?
2. How does knowing that your ultimate citizenship is in heaven change the way you face the difficulties of today?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for being my Shepherd when I cannot see the way ahead. Help me trust You in every valley and keep moving forward rather than becoming discouraged by how far I still have to go. Remind me that my righteousness comes from You, not from my own efforts. Fix my eyes on the hope of heaven and give me courage to follow You faithfully today, knowing that You will never let me go.
